One of North Carolina's Good Roads, and Other Stories
Postcards present an idealized, and sometimes even fantastical depiction of a place. The transformation of the image from postcard, to watercolor and wood diorama, to projection, and finally to film, emphasizes the removal of meaning from the image at each stage. Each is a copy of a copy, experienced as its own representation.
The stories told in relation to each place depicted on the cards are an unexpected dialog of that idealized image. Their meanings are juxtaposed, or deviate from the intended sense of place, which highlights the individual nature of experience and remembrance.
This project was a collaboration with Nora Hartlaub.
